Making do

Women were now required to join the work force, where Nylon stockings were rationed so the women in stead made do and started to wear trousers.




1940-1947

The Fashion industry came to a halt, where there became clothes rationing and there was a general shortages

New Look

The new feminine fashion looks was put to one side during the war and was recreated again in 1947 by Christina Dior.

Short Bolero jackets

      Short Bolero Jackets were worn with gloves, this was more etiquette during the day and in the evening the gloves would match the gowns.

Change in shape

Women wanted more of the feminine look with a rounded bust, long hair, frills, with now the forehead wanting to be shown. This was a change in look compared to the 1920's with the Vamp look. 

Men Suits

Even men with little money would make an effort to have a 'Sunday best'. Burtons became an affordable mens clothing at the time.

Sophisticated image

Compared to the wild daring 1920's "flappy girl" look, women would try harder to look more sophisticated and and appear nice all the time this made people wear there Sunday best. This was a time where it was more quite and better to act more respectable.

1930-1940

A financial issue came up what made a big divide between the rich and poor.
The rich were able to still shop at expensive boutiques and keep two homes. On the other hand the poor would like in small homes with no running water.


Exposed Look

The Fashion industry started to create a more exposed look for women usually for the evening. the look would have long line sleeveless bodices, these would have plunge cut backs with bias cutting and drapes.

HOLLYWOOD

Hollywood Glamour within the cinema with movie stars was something women to aspired to look like
The 'Vamped' look then came into place where the eyes were the focal point, with dark eyes and to cover the eyebrows or forehead with a scarf , ribbon or thick fringe 

"Flapper Girl"

The "Flapper Girl" arrived in the time where women would smoke in public and cut there hair short and wore makeup, It was a time where women were becoming new.


End of World War One

Society began to look forward to things after hard times. This made designers s pick up on the new attitude towards things. This made everything change such as manners were less formal and clothes were more casual, there was more freedom.

Gabrielle Chanel
Chanel made jersey the top of fashion even though previously it had been used mainly for mens sports wear and underwear.


Menswear

Smocking Jackets
This was the male versions of the tea gown.
They would be made out of soft fabrics like velvet to make it more relaxing for the wearer
They would often have frogs

Suffragettes


The suffragettes wore and used the colours Green, Purple and White, As the "votes for women", they stood for: Dignity, Purity and Hope

1914

During this time it was the start of the world war one, where there was rationing within everything even fabric.

Paris Fashion week continued as planned.
Fashion was then being made to be practical as women needed to do the male jobs.
